OH! Neiric, when dreams meet the material – Otto Luogo dell’arte

Post written by: Ilaria D'Adamio

On Thursday, September 22 at 18.00 Olivia Toscani Rucellai’s gallery OTTO Luogo dell’arte inaugurated the new exhibition “Oh! NEIRIC, when dreams meet the materia” (OH! NIRICA, quando i sogni incontrano la materia) with a special presentation event in the ancient courtyard of Palazzo Rucellai.

The oneiric matrix of the night, human side in which rest and unconscious combine to give rise to new journeys, is the theme of the exhibition by Otto. The result is a substantial collection of works, that reinterpret the dream, by 40 artists and designers from various parts of the world and of different ages who share a love for Italy.

A surreal atmosphere is breathed in the courtyard of Rucellai, walking through a three-dimensional setup which is an invitation to live the works.  Surrealist and concrete forms which do not lose sight of the ergonomic and functional objects, revisited in an imaginative, if not symbolic way. Rounded lines, synthesis and development of embryonic details, traceable in nature. Simple and environmentally friendly materials such as wood, textiles, copper, brass, glass, marble, fiberglass. The works highlight the advantage of manual processing linked to the graphic sketch, which carries out the project.

For once in the contemporary, the importance of the aesthetic result is alienated from the serial production and traced back, thanks to Otto’s work selection, to the skill in the production of handicraft products.

Mario Lovi, the gallery art director, dedicates to the exhibition her brand new Letto abbarca, the semantic core of the exhibition.

This is a wonderful bed whose sail canopy refers explicitly to the Phoenician boats and reveals to the audience why the setting is in the historic building: the Rucellai family was indeed an important family of merchants, who sailed for the Mediterranean on massive timber ships to fulfill the dream of discovery, conquest and trade. Here it is revealed a close link with the tradition and origins that the team of Otto wants to stress in presenting the “new” and ‘”current”. It is about the contemporary that interprets the present with the awareness of the achievements of a prosperous past, often hidden, but vital to the achievement of artistic and architectural trends of today.

It is materialized around a bed a constellation of objects that surround sleep, such as pillows, libraries, bed sheets, bedspreads, lamps, floor lamps, clocks, mirrors, ottomans, fireplaces, chairs, cabinets and even a collection of small stories to sleep and dream.

The exhibition continues until November 12, 2011, within the gallery space OTTO luogo dell’arte, focusing on: “A bed and the tools to dream and sleep”, a project conceived by Mario Lovi, coordinated with Olivia Toscani Rucellai and her collaborator Filippo Maria Ricci.

Moreover, at the end of October OTTO luogo dell’arte invites all visitors to Berlin, where it will attend with a selection of “Oh! Neiric” the QUBIQUE. International Exhibition of Crafts and Design.
